About

Jing Shen is a materials scientist whose innovative work bridges the gap between traditional papermaking and advanced functional hydrogels. Her research focuses on transforming cellulosic fibers—the fundamental building blocks of paper—into sustainable, high-performance soft materials with remarkable properties. Shen’s major contribution lies in developing a novel approach to convert dilute slurries of hollow tube-like papermaking fibers into phase-reversible, self-healable, and stretchable hydrogels (2019, 15 citations), demonstrating that industrial papermaking processes can be repurposed for creating next-generation biomaterials. Building on this foundation, she pioneered nanoparticle-loaded cellulosic hollow fibers with pitted walls as skeleton materials for multifunctional electromagnetic hydrogels (2024, 9 citations), opening new possibilities for applications in soft robotics, biomedical engineering, and energy harvesting.
