Ignacio Trujillo is a leading astrophysicist renowned for his pioneering work on the low-surface-brightness universe and the assembly history of galaxies. His primary research focuses on detecting and analyzing the faint, diffuse structures that reveal how galaxies grow through mergers and tidal interactions. Trujillo’s most influential contribution is his pilot survey of stellar tidal streams in spiral galaxies of the Local Volume, which demonstrated that even seemingly normal disk galaxies are surrounded by extended tidal features—remnants of past minor mergers. This work, cited over 390 times, provided critical observational evidence supporting the hierarchical model of galaxy formation.
