About
Hideyuki Tamura is a pioneering figure in mixed and diminished reality, whose foundational work has shaped how we perceive and interact with the seamless blend of real and virtual worlds. As the lead editor of the landmark 1998 volume *Mixed Reality: Merging Real and Virtual Worlds*—which has garnered over 218 citations—Tamura introduced and codified the concept of mixed reality as a broader, more integrated form of virtual reality. This seminal publication, born from the first International Symposium on Mixed Reality, brought together global experts and established the theoretical and practical groundwork for an entire field. More recently, Tamura has advanced the frontier of diminished reality (DR), a complementary technique that interactively removes or suppresses unwanted objects from a user’s perception of their environment. His 2016 paper on designing data acquisition facilities for DR research provides essential infrastructure and evaluation workflows for this emerging area. Through these contributions, Tamura has not only defined key research directions but also provided the tools and frameworks that enable others to build more compelling, unobtrusive, and useful augmented experiences.
