Hari Balakrishnan is a pioneering computer scientist whose research lies at the intersection of networked systems, mobile computing, and sensing. He is best known for his foundational work on indoor location systems, most notably the Cricket system, which uses a combination of radio frequency and ultrasound to achieve precise, decentralized location tracking. This work, published in 2005 and garnering over 410 citations, has enabled a wide range of location-aware applications, from robot navigation to interactive virtual environments. Beyond Cricket, Balakrishnan has made seminal contributions to wireless networking, congestion control, and data center networks, with his papers collectively amassing tens of thousands of citations. A recipient of the ACM SIGCOMM Lifetime Achievement Award and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, he is also celebrated for his mentorship and leadership at MIT, where he co-directs the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
