About
Haochi Pan is pioneering the intersection of robotics and ophthalmic imaging, with a focus on developing mobile, autonomous systems for optical coherence tomography (OCT). His research addresses critical limitations in traditional eye imaging, which requires patients to remain rigidly positioned—a challenge for those with involuntary eye movements or mobility constraints. Pan’s major contributions include the design and validation of a mobile robotic OCT system capable of operating in clinical environments without requiring patients to brace against the instrument. He also introduced active motion cancellation algorithms that compensate for nystagmus and other involuntary eye movements during imaging, demonstrated through phantom studies. Though early in his career, his work has already garnered citations and represents a significant step toward accessible, patient-friendly ophthalmic diagnostics. By enabling automated, adaptive imaging, Pan is helping to expand OCT’s utility beyond the clinic to broader point-of-care settings, with the potential to improve diagnosis and management of eye diseases for a wider patient population.
