About

Hanfeng Qin is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of biomimetic micro-robotics and gastrointestinal therapeutics. His primary research areas include micro/nano-motors, targeted drug delivery systems, and inflammatory bowel disease treatment. Qin’s most notable contribution is the development of a biomimetic sweeping microrobot for active therapy of ulcerative colitis (UC), which has already garnered 16 citations since its 2025 publication. This innovative Mg@PLGA@PEI microswimmer was inspired by household sweeping robots and addresses two key pathological drivers of UC: overproduction of pathogenic cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). By engineering a magnesium core with a biodegradable polymer coating, Qin created a self-propelling therapeutic platform that can navigate the complex gastrointestinal environment while neutralizing these harmful factors. This work represents a paradigm shift from passive drug delivery to active disease intervention at the microscale. His research has significant implications for precision medicine in inflammatory conditions, offering a potential alternative to conventional systemic therapies with their associated side effects. Qin’s approach exemplifies how bio-inspired design can solve longstanding challenges in targeted therapy.
