About
Haitao Zheng is a researcher whose work spans two compelling and increasingly vital domains: millimeter-wave radar imaging for autonomous systems and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of structural components. His most influential contributions lie in pioneering the reuse of 60GHz millimeter-wave communication hardware for mobile radar imaging — a breakthrough concept that earned his 2015 paper "Reusing 60GHz Radios for Mobile Radar Imaging" over 128 citations and established him as a key voice in autonomous sensing research. By demonstrating that existing networking hardware could serve double duty as a robust environmental mapping tool, Zheng opened new possibilities for drones, robots, and autonomous vehicles operating across challenging real-world conditions. His 2017 follow-up on single-device object recognition and navigation further extended this vision with 45 citations. More recently, Zheng has turned his attention to wind energy infrastructure, developing compact laser shearography systems integrated with robotic climbers for on-site wind turbine blade inspection — addressing critical safety and maintenance challenges in renewable energy. This breadth of expertise, from wireless sensing to optical NDE, reflects a researcher driven by practical, high-impact engineering solutions across diverse and societally significant fields.
