H. Stephen Wright is a pioneering aerospace engineer whose work has advanced the technologies needed for robotic and human exploration of Mars. His primary research areas center on planetary entry, descent, and landing systems, with a particular focus on aerocapture and aerial platform design. Wright’s most influential contribution is his leadership on the ARES (Aerial Regional-scale Environmental Surveyor) mission concept, a robotic aerial platform designed to fly in the Martian atmosphere. His 2003 paper on the ARES mission overview, with 28 citations, established the core capabilities and requirements for this innovative approach to near-surface Mars science.
