About

Guglielmo Lanzani is a pioneering physicist and engineer whose research sits at the intersection of organic optoelectronics, biophotonics, and neuroengineering. He is best known for developing molecular phototransducers—light-sensitive compounds that can directly stimulate biological tissues without genetic modification. His major contributions include demonstrating how organic semiconductors and photoactive molecules can interface with cells to control neural activity and muscle contraction. In his highly cited 2023 work on skeletal muscle cells, Lanzani showed that a newly designed intramembrane molecular transducer can optically stimulate C2C12 myotubes, triggering collective contraction with high spatiotemporal precision.
