About
Goro Tajima is a leading orthopaedic researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of graft impingement in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. His research focuses on the biomechanical consequences of tunnel placement, specifically investigating how graft positioning affects impingement against both the intercondylar roof and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). In his landmark 2008 study, Tajima was among the first to systematically quantify roof impingement pressure in a porcine model, demonstrating how different tibial and femoral tunnel positions directly alter anterior tibial translation and impingement forces—a finding that has garnered over 60 citations and shaped modern surgical technique. He extended this work in 2011 by evaluating PCL-to-graft impingement, comparing anatomical versus non-anatomical single-bundle reconstructions, and showing that tunnel malpositioning can create deleterious contact pressures against the PCL. Tajima’s contributions have provided critical biomechanical evidence that helps surgeons avoid common pitfalls in ACL reconstruction, ultimately improving graft survival and patient outcomes.
