Gianluca Di Rico is a leading figure in the development of robotic astronomical observatories for the world’s most extreme environments, with a primary focus on Antarctic infrared astronomy. His key research centers on enabling autonomous operations at Dome C, Antarctica—a site considered the best on Earth for thermal and far-infrared observations due to its exceptional cold, low sky brightness, and minimal water vapor. Di Rico’s major contributions include the design and deployment of the International Robotic Antarctic Infrared Telescope (IRAIT) and the Antarctic Multiband Infrared CAmera (AMICA).
