About

Dr. G. Colombina is a pioneering roboticist whose career bridges two transformative domains: space automation and industrial ergonomics. Early work with the European Space Agency established Colombina as a key figure in orbital robotics, notably through the development of the External Servicing Testbed for Automation and Robotics (ESTAR) and the ARTES ground testbed—critical platforms for validating control concepts and operational procedures for the International Space Station. The JERICO project demonstrated autonomous robotic servicing on the Mir space station, while the EUROPA initiative explored external payload automation. These contributions, though modest in citation count (2–14), laid foundational groundwork for space-based robotic servicing. Colombina’s most impactful contribution, however, is the Proto-MATE ergonomic exoskeleton (142 citations), a wearable passive upper-limb device designed to reduce physical strain in industrial workers. This work, framed within the HUMANufacturing approach, represents a paradigm shift from space to terrestrial applications. By experimentally validating the exoskeleton’s effectiveness with human subjects, Colombina directly addressed the global challenge of workplace musculoskeletal injuries. This dual legacy—advancing both orbital robotics and human-centered industrial automation—showcases a rare ability to translate complex engineering into practical, life-improving technologies.
