About
Fuxiang Chu is pioneering the development of next-generation, bio-inspired soft materials, with a primary focus on cellulose-based hydrogels and eutectogels for advanced electronic skin (E-skin) and human-machine interfaces. His most impactful work, a 2023 study on a skin-like, transparent, and fatigue-resistant cellulose-based eutectogel, has garnered 117 citations for its breakthrough in achieving high resilience and low hysteresis—critical properties for self-powered E-skin. This research directly addresses the challenge of mimicking human skin’s mechanical and sensory performance. Chu also contributed a biomimetic strategy to synthesize strong, tough, and elastic cellulose-enhanced magnetic hydrogels, expanding the material’s functionality. Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability, his 2025 life cycle assessment of these hydrogels provides the first detailed environmental cost evaluation, a vital step toward replacing petroleum-based materials in soft robotics and wearables. Through these contributions, Chu is not only advancing material science but also ensuring that future technologies are both high-performing and environmentally responsible.
