Francesco Fuentes is a rising researcher at the intersection of soft robotics, human-robot interaction, and embodied intelligence. His work centers on two transformative challenges: enabling soft, growing robots—often called “vine robots”—to autonomously navigate and map unknown, cluttered environments, and designing novel haptic interfaces that make robot learning transparent to human teachers. In his 2023 paper on passive deformation for SLAM, Fuentes demonstrated how vine robots can map unstructured terrains by exploiting their own physical compliance, a breakthrough for search-and-rescue and exploration in confined spaces.
