About
Fong-Chin Su is a leading figure in rehabilitation robotics, whose work centers on developing and validating robotic systems to restore upper limb function in chronic stroke survivors. His major contributions lie in creating innovative, task-specific robotic interventions that bridge the gap between clinical therapy and home-based care. Su’s seminal 2007 paper, with 107 citations, demonstrated that robot-aided bilateral force-induced isokinetic arm training, when combined with conventional rehabilitation, significantly improves arm motor function. This foundational work paved the way for his later innovations, including the Tenodesis-Induced-Grip Exoskeleton Robot (TIGER), a lightweight device designed to assist grip and upper extremity movements. Through rigorous randomized controlled trials, Su has shown that TIGER, especially when equipped with an assist-as-needed control strategy, yields substantial gains in motor and functional performance. His research also extends to the Internet of Things, as evidenced by a 2022 study showing that IoT-enabled robot-assisted therapy can be effectively delivered as a home program. With a career dedicated to translating engineering principles into tangible patient outcomes, Su’s work has profoundly impacted neurorehabilitation, offering new hope and independence to individuals living with chronic stroke.
