About

Ethiraj Venkatapathy is a pioneering figure in thermal protection systems (TPS) and entry, descent, and landing (EDL) technologies for extreme planetary environments. His research focuses on developing advanced heat shields and deployable decelerators that enable NASA’s most ambitious robotic missions. Venkatapathy’s major contributions include leading the invention and maturation of the Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA), a low-density ablative material proven for sample return missions from the Moon, asteroids, and Mars. He also spearheaded the Heat-shield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET) project, creating a woven TPS capable of withstanding the severe entry conditions at Venus and the outer planets—a capability previously unavailable.
