Emanuele Lettieri’s research sits at the intersection of healthcare innovation, human-centered design, and technology assessment. His work focuses on how emerging technologies—from virtual coaching systems to assistive robotics—can improve quality of life, particularly for vulnerable populations such as older adults, stroke survivors, and visually impaired individuals. A key contribution is his systematic review on virtual coaches for older adults’ wellbeing, which has garnered 62 citations and frames e-coaching as a cost-effective, scalable solution for physical, cognitive, and emotional support. Lettieri also advances the methodology for evaluating healthcare technologies: his work on an extended Social Return on Investment (SROI) framework, applied to robotic rehabilitation for upper limb impairment after stroke, addresses the critical gap in measuring both social and environmental impacts—a novel contribution with growing relevance. More recently, his BUDD-e project, funded by the Polisocial Award at Politecnico di Milano, exemplifies his commitment to inclusive design. By developing an autonomous droid to shape accessible public spaces for visually impaired people, Lettieri bridges engineering, social science, and disability studies.
