Efisio Puxeddu is a leading endocrinologist and molecular biologist whose research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of thyroid cancer initiation and progression. His primary focus lies in the molecular mechanisms of papillary thyroid carcinomas, particularly the role of RET/PTC rearrangements—genetic alterations now recognized as key tumor-initiating events. In his landmark 2003 study (26 citations), Puxeddu identified microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1 (mPGES-1) as a RET/PTC-inducible gene using subtraction hybridization cloning and custom microarrays.
