About

Chongfeng Zhao is pioneering the field of soft robotics through the innovative use of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs)—active materials that respond autonomously to external stimuli. His research focuses on designing light-fueled, self-sustaining machines that eliminate the need for complex sensors or external control systems. Among his most impactful contributions is the development of a light-fueled self-fluttering aircraft with an LCE-based engine (2024, 28 citations), which demonstrates how continuous light exposure can drive sustained, oscillatory motion. He has also engineered a self-paddling boat powered by an LCE motor (2024, 22 citations), addressing the fundamental challenge of regulating motion behavior in active machines. Most recently, Zhao introduced a light-powered self-rolling dicycle (2025, 13 citations), further expanding the repertoire of autonomous locomotion strategies. His work is notable for its elegant simplicity—harnessing material properties to achieve complex, untethered movement without onboard power or control. With over 60 cumulative citations in just two years, Zhao’s research is rapidly shaping the future of autonomous soft robots, offering scalable solutions for applications in exploration, environmental monitoring, and micro-manufacturing.
