Charles Whittaker is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally advanced autonomous exploration in extreme environments. His primary research areas encompass field robotics, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and autonomous navigation in unstructured, GPS-denied settings. Whittaker’s most significant contribution is the development of a fully autonomous robotic system capable of mapping abandoned mines—a notoriously challenging domain characterized by darkness, dust, and complex topology.
