About
Charles F. Claver is a leading figure in observational astrophysics and astronomical instrumentation, with a career spanning gamma-ray burst (GRB) science and the development of next-generation survey telescopes. His seminal work on GRB 990123, one of the most intensely studied bursts, provided critical early evidence for the fireball model. Claver led broad-band ultraviolet-to-near-infrared observations starting just 8.5 hours post-event, which, when combined with data from the ROTSE experiment, revealed a steep optical decay consistent with a relativistic fireball expanding into a uniform medium. This foundational paper, with over 110 citations, helped cement the standard model of GRB afterglows. Beyond transient science, Claver is renowned for his leadership in building large-scale astronomical facilities. He served as the Systems Engineer for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST, now the Vera C. Rubin Observatory), where his contributions were pivotal in defining the observatory’s operational and data management architecture.
