About
C. E. Barbosa is a leading figure in extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology, best known for their pivotal role in the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). Barbosa’s research centers on galaxy evolution, large-scale structure, and the development of innovative photometric techniques using multi-band optical surveys. Their most cited work, “The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS): improved SEDs, morphologies, and redshifts with 12 optical filters” (2019, 197 citations), represents a landmark contribution. In this study, Barbosa and the S-PLUS collaboration demonstrated how a unique set of 12 narrow and broad optical filters—including a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope at Cerro Tololo—enables precise spectral energy distributions, robust morphological classifications, and accurate photometric redshifts for millions of galaxies. This work has become a foundational resource for the community, enabling studies of galaxy properties across cosmic time and serving as a critical input for follow-up spectroscopy. Barbosa’s efforts have significantly advanced our ability to map the local universe, and their leadership in S-PLUS continues to drive discoveries in galaxy formation and large-scale structure.
