Barry F. Madore is a distinguished astronomer whose research centers on galaxy formation and evolution, the structure of the Milky Way, and the cosmic distance scale. His most impactful work explores the hierarchical assembly of galaxies through minor mergers and tidal interactions. In his highly cited 2010 pilot survey, Madore demonstrated that most seemingly normal spiral galaxies in the Local Volume are surrounded by faint, extended stellar tidal streams—direct evidence of ongoing galactic cannibalism and accretion. This work, with 393 citations, fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how disk galaxies evolve over cosmic time. Madore is also a leading authority on RR Lyrae variable stars as standard candles.
