About
Bangyuan Liu is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of soft robotics, bioinspired locomotion, and biomechanics. Drawing inspiration from biological organisms—most notably earthworms—Liu has made significant contributions to understanding and replicating the mechanisms that enable movement across challenging terrains, including cohesive soils, granular media, and complex aquatic environments. Liu's most influential work explores earthworm-inspired soft robots, demonstrating how kirigami skin structures and lateral bending behaviors improve anchoring and locomotion underground—research that has garnered over 60 and 29 citations respectively. A landmark 2020 study (56 citations) advanced the field further by integrating stretchable nanocomposite sensors and wireless electronics into soft robots, enabling closed-loop sensory feedback control—a critical step toward autonomous biomimetic systems. Beyond terrestrial locomotion, Liu has investigated soft swimming robots, examining form-function relationships in fish-inspired designs and developing novel roll-rotation mechanisms for underwater maneuverability. More recently, Liu has explored vibration-driven locomotion on granular terrain, with applications in extraterrestrial exploration. Across these varied domains, Liu's research consistently bridges biological insight with engineering innovation, advancing our understanding of how soft-bodied systems can navigate complex, real-world environments.
