Bahareh Behkam is a pioneer in the emerging field of biohybrid microrobotics, where she harnesses living bacteria as biological actuators to power and control microscale robots. Her groundbreaking work, beginning with her highly cited 2007 paper on bacterial flagella-based propulsion (348 citations), demonstrated that flagellar motors from *Serratia marcescens* could be used for the on/off motion control of microscale objects—solving the long-standing bottleneck of miniaturized on-board power sources.
