About

Ao Liu is a pioneering thoracic surgeon whose work is redefining the boundaries of minimally invasive lung surgery. His primary research focuses on advancing robotic-assisted techniques for complex pulmonary and transplant procedures. Dr. Liu’s major contributions include the development of a novel single utility port approach for robot-assisted sleeve segmentectomy, a lung-sparing surgery for bronchial carcinoid tumors, which he successfully performed on an elderly patient. He has also pushed the frontier of transplant surgery by demonstrating the feasibility of robot-assisted single lung transplantation, a technique that could dramatically reduce the invasiveness of this traditionally high-morbidity procedure. While his clinical papers are early in their citation lifecycle (7 and 3 citations respectively), they represent foundational work in a rapidly evolving field. Demonstrating a unique interdisciplinary breadth, Dr. Liu also contributes to control theory, co-authoring a paper on robust adaptive control for DC motor systems in robot manipulators. This work highlights his deep understanding of the engineering challenges underpinning robotic surgery, positioning him as a true innovator at the intersection of medicine and robotics.
