Anuj Kapuria is a pioneering researcher in human-robot interaction, with a focused interest in the long-term deployment of assistive robots in public, unstructured environments. His foundational work centers on the development and social integration of "Neel," a wheeled mobile robot designed for shopping malls. In a landmark pilot study (2011, 19 citations), Kapuria investigated the real-world social dynamics and technical requirements for such a robot, observing interactions during the busy Christmas holiday season. This work was extended in his 2012 study (8 citations), where he detailed Neel’s innovative ecosystem architecture, which leveraged rich web interactions and unified communication methods to maintain an interpersonal connection with users. By moving beyond lab settings, Kapuria’s research directly addressed the challenges of creating robots that can operate autonomously and socially in crowded, dynamic spaces. Beyond his direct research, Kapuria played a key organizational role in the robotics community, serving as a contributor to the inaugural Proceedings of the Conference on Advances In Robotics (AIR) in 2013, a series established by the Robotics Society of India to foster new ideas in the field.
