About

Antonis Gkikas is an atmospheric scientist whose research sits at the intersection of aerosol remote sensing, desert dust climatology, and satellite retrieval methodology. Working primarily within the Mediterranean Basin, North Africa, and the Middle East, he has made significant contributions to our understanding of how mineral dust and other aerosols are detected, characterized, and quantified from space. His landmark 2013 study optimizing CALIPSO Saharan dust retrievals (180 citations) and his complementary work establishing the regime of intense desert dust episodes across the Mediterranean (155 citations) together transformed how researchers approach satellite-based dust monitoring. His development of the MIDAS global dust optical depth dataset (145 citations) provided the community with a high-resolution, reliable resource that has become widely adopted for climate and health impact studies. Gkikas has also advanced neural network applications for aerosol microphysical retrievals and investigated the complex optical properties of stratospheric wildfire smoke.
