About

Franco Marenco is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on mineral dust, aerosol–cloud interactions, and boundary layer processes, with a particular emphasis on the Sahara—the world’s largest dust source. He made a landmark contribution as a key investigator in the Fennec climate programme, which combined aircraft observations and modelling to transform our understanding of Saharan dust emissions, transport, and their coupling with the planetary boundary layer. His 2015 paper on Fennec aircraft observations (85 citations) remains a foundational reference for dust and desert meteorology. More recently, Marenco has pioneered the development of a near-global, multiyear climate data record that separates fine-mode and coarse-mode components of atmospheric pure dust (2024, 13 and 3 citations). This innovative product enables more accurate assessments of dust’s radiative effects and its role in climate forcing. His work bridges observational and satellite remote sensing communities, providing critical datasets for climate models.
