About

Anna Silvanto is a pioneering urological surgeon whose research centers on real-time surgical margin assessment during radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Her work directly addresses a critical clinical challenge: the difficulty of intraoperatively detecting positive surgical margins using current, resource-intensive pathology workflows. Dr. Silvanto is the lead investigator of the IP8-FLUORESCE study, a landmark protocol (10 citations) that evaluates fluorescence confocal microscopy as a rapid, cost-effective alternative for margin assessment. Building on this, she developed the LaserSAFE technique, a novel confocal laser microscopy approach whose feasibility study (2025, 2 citations) demonstrates strong diagnostic performance and paves the way for a multicenter trial comparing it to the established NeuroSAFE method. By championing these innovative imaging technologies, Silvanto is driving a paradigm shift toward real-time, point-of-care pathology that could reduce reoperation rates and improve oncologic outcomes. Her work represents a vital bridge between surgical innovation and practical, scalable solutions for the stretched pathology workforce.
