Alex Waibel is a pioneering researcher in multimodal human-robot interaction, whose career has been defined by an ambitious effort to make machines communicate with humans as naturally as possible. Working primarily at the intersection of speech recognition, dialogue systems, and visual perception, Waibel has made foundational contributions to enabling robots to understand and respond to the full richness of human communication — including spontaneous speech, pointing gestures, head pose, and emotional cues.
