Philosophy, as it applies to robotics and AI, is the systematic study of foundational questions surrounding the nature, ethics, and societal implications of intelligent machines and automated systems. Drawing from branches such as ethics, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and social philosophy, it examines questions like whether robots can possess moral status, how embodiment shapes cognition, and what responsibilities designers and societies bear when deploying autonomous systems. In practice, philosophical frameworks inform how researchers approach machine consciousness, the uncanny valley, anthropomorphism, and the design of moral machines capable of navigating ethically complex situations. Philosophy also interrogates the social realities that technology constructs and transforms, from labor displacement to human identity. It matters because technical capability alone cannot answer whether a robot *should* act in a given way, only whether it *can*. As AI systems grow more autonomous and pervasive, philosophical grounding helps engineers, policymakers, and ethicists anticipate consequences, establish accountability, and ensure that robotics development remains aligned with human values and societal well-being.
