About

Yushu Ma is pioneering the study of cellular heterogeneity in cancer metastasis through innovative microfluidic technologies. Her research focuses on understanding how individual cancer cells migrate—a critical step toward metastasis and the primary cause of cancer deaths. Ma’s major contribution is the development of a high-throughput microfluidic single-cell migration chip, which overcomes the limitations of conventional assays by tracking hundreds of individual migrating cells simultaneously. Her 2022 paper on this chip, which has garnered 25 citations, revealed that traditional drug screening masks crucial cellular diversity, paving the way for discovering anti-metastatic compounds rather than just cytotoxic drugs. In her 2023 follow-up study (10 citations), Ma demonstrated how different extracellular matrix compositions influence single-cell movement, providing mechanistic insights into how the tumor microenvironment drives invasion. Her most recent 2024 work advances the field further by linking single-cell phenotypes to genotypes, bridging a critical gap in understanding how cellular behavior relates to genetic variation. Ma’s integrated approach—combining microfluidics, live-cell imaging, and single-cell analysis—positions her as a rising leader in cancer biology and precision medicine, with her tools already enabling more targeted drug discovery for metastatic disease.
