About

Ya-Yun Lee is a rehabilitation scientist whose research focuses on stroke recovery, robotic-assisted therapy, and upper limb motor rehabilitation. Working primarily with chronic stroke populations, Lee has made significant contributions to understanding how innovative therapeutic combinations can maximize functional recovery for stroke survivors. Lee's most influential work examines the synergistic effects of robot-assisted therapy (RT) paired with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, demonstrating meaningful improvements in motor function, daily activities, and quality of life in a rigorous double-blinded randomized controlled trial (58 citations). Building on this foundation, Lee has pioneered the concept of "robotic priming" — using robotic therapy as a preparatory technique to enhance the effects of subsequent interventions such as mirror therapy, bilateral arm training, and movement-oriented approaches. This innovative framework has shaped contemporary thinking in stroke rehabilitation protocol design. Lee has also contributed practically to clinical decision-making by investigating how Fugl-Meyer Assessment scores can predict and guide appropriate rehabilitation interventions. With research spanning comparative efficacy trials, outcome measure validation, and study protocol development, Lee's cumulative body of work has helped establish evidence-based frameworks that clinicians can apply to optimize recovery strategies for the estimated millions living with chronic stroke-related disability.
