About
Xiaohui Fu is a leading figure in planetary spectroscopy and astromaterials science, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the composition and evolution of extraterrestrial surfaces. Her primary research focuses on the characterization of amorphous silicates and poorly crystalline phases in meteorites and planetary regoliths, bridging the gap between laboratory experiments and remote sensing observations. In her highly cited 2017 study (41 citations), Fu systematically investigated how polymerization affects the Raman and mid-infrared spectral features of alkali and alkali earth silicate glasses, providing critical ground-truth data for interpreting data from missions like Mars Science Laboratory. This work has been instrumental in identifying amorphous components in carbonaceous chondrites and in the mudstones of Gale Crater, where CheMin instruments detected abundant non-crystalline materials. By establishing quantitative spectral-structural relationships, Fu’s contributions enable researchers to decode the thermal and aqueous histories of planetary bodies. Her research has profound implications for understanding water-rock interactions on Mars and the primitive materials of the early Solar System, making her a key voice in the next generation of planetary scientists.
