About
Takuji Nabetani’s research centers on the proteomics of the human kidney, with a particular focus on the glomerulus—the critical filtering unit whose dysfunction underlies many renal diseases. His major contribution lies in pioneering the systematic mapping of the normal human glomerular proteome. In his landmark 2005 study, which has garnered 72 citations, Nabetani and his team used two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry to construct the first comprehensive protein expression profile of the healthy glomerulus. This foundational work not only identified hundreds of proteins but also led to the creation of an extensible markup language (XML)-based database, enabling researchers worldwide to access and compare glomerular protein data. By establishing this baseline proteomic map, Nabetani provided an essential reference for understanding the molecular changes in kidney pathophysiology. His database remains a valuable resource for nephrology and proteomics communities, supporting efforts to discover biomarkers and therapeutic targets for glomerular diseases. Nabetani’s work exemplifies how systematic, open-access proteomic profiling can accelerate translational research in organ-specific physiology.
