About
Dr. T. Laing is a leading figure in medical physics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the precision of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). His primary research focuses on the design and physical characterization of advanced collimation systems for robotic radiosurgery, most notably the CyberKnife platform. Dr. Laing’s most impactful contribution is the development and validation of a novel multileaf collimator (MLC) optimized for non-coplanar SBRT delivery. This work, detailed in his highly cited 2016 paper (47 citations), demonstrated that an MLC could be effectively integrated into the CyberKnife system, replacing traditional fixed and variable circular apertures. By proving the MLC’s ability to shape radiation beams with high conformality while preserving the system’s full robotic workspace, he directly enabled more complex and targeted treatments for tumors. This achievement has been instrumental in expanding the clinical utility of robotic radiosurgery, allowing for faster, more precise dose delivery to irregularly shaped lesions while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Dr. Laing’s research continues to set the standard for innovation in stereotactic radiation delivery.
