About

Steven L. Finkelstein is a leading observational astrophysicist whose research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies in the early universe, particularly during the epoch of reionization. As a key member of the CANDELS and CEERS teams, he has made transformative contributions to our understanding of the first billion years of cosmic history, using the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes to identify and characterize some of the most distant galaxies ever observed. His work has been cited over 20,000 times, with landmark papers on galaxy luminosity functions and stellar mass assembly shaping the field. Finkelstein is also deeply involved in next-generation instrumentation; he is a principal investigator for the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey and a key contributor to the GMT/MANIFEST project, a fibre-fed positioning system that will dramatically enhance the Giant Magellan Telescope’s spectroscopic capabilities. His leadership in both observational discovery and instrument development positions him at the forefront of extragalactic astronomy, driving the quest to understand how galaxies emerged from the cosmic dark ages.
