About

Sebastian Conran is a pioneering figure in companion robotics, whose work bridges engineering, design, and human-robot interaction. His primary research focuses on developing emotionally-engaging robots for edutainment, assistive care, and therapy, with a particular emphasis on biomimetic design and long-term user engagement. Conran’s most notable contribution is the creation of MIRO (later MiRo), a pet-sized, biomimetic companion robot that integrates aesthetics, morphology, behavior, and control architecture to foster genuine human-robot bonds. His 2015 paper on MIRO (29 citations) established the platform’s foundational design principles, while subsequent work (2017, 11 citations; 2018, 5 citations) refined its sensory and emotional capabilities for research and therapeutic applications. Conran also contributed to the FET Flagship “Robot Companions for Citizens” (2012, 10 citations), a roadmap for empowering older adults through robotic assistance. Beyond companion robotics, his technical innovations include an omnidirectional dynamically balancing platform for remote inspection (2018, 3 citations) and velocity-constrained trajectory generation for Mecanum-wheeled robots (2019, 2 citations). Conran’s work uniquely combines rigorous engineering with user-centered design, making him a key voice in shaping how robots can become trusted, long-term partners in everyday life.
