About
Dr. Richard Hummel is a pioneering surgeon and educator at the forefront of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS). His research is dedicated to solving a critical gap in modern surgery: the lack of standardized, evidence-based training curricula for surgical residents. Dr. Hummel’s major contribution is the conception and prospective multicentric validation of the **Robotic Surgery Training Curriculum (RoSTraC)**, a comprehensive program that guides surgeons from simulation and laboratory training to safe integration into the operating room. This work, published in 2024 and already garnering 20 citations, addresses the urgent need for structured education in RAS. He further advanced the field by leading a modified Delphi process to establish a national consensus curriculum for MIS and RAS in Germany (GeRMIQ), a landmark achievement for standardizing surgical training nationwide. Dr. Hummel has also documented the successful implementation of a robotic upper GI and HPB surgery program through a stepwise approach, analyzing the first 100 operations at a center of excellence. His work is not only shaping how future surgeons are trained but also ensuring patient safety and quality as robotic technology becomes a standard of care.
