About
Dr. Peter Yellowlees is a pioneering psychiatrist and informatician whose work bridges mental health care and digital technology. His research focuses on telepsychiatry, clinical informatics, and the impact of digital media on mental health, particularly among young people. A major contribution is his development of the "Asynchronous Telepsychiatry" model, which enables remote psychiatric consultations through store-and-forward video, expanding access to underserved populations. He has also explored the phenomenon of "cyberchondria," examining how online health information can amplify anxiety. With over 150 publications and more than 4,000 citations, his work has shaped modern telemedicine practices. Notably, his 2008 paper on "3-D Telestration: A Teaching Tool for Robotic Surgery" (34 citations) demonstrates his interdisciplinary reach, applying telepresence technology to surgical education. As a former director of the UC Davis Center for Health and Technology, Yellowlees has been a leading voice in integrating digital tools into clinical care, earning him the American Telemedicine Association's President's Award for his contributions to the field.
