Mikhail V. Panchenko is a leading figure in atmospheric aerosol research, with a career dedicated to understanding the optical and microphysical properties of aerosols and their climatic impacts. His work spans two critical areas: the characterization of biomass burning plumes and the remote sensing of aerosol properties over vast oceanic regions. A major contribution is his pioneering research on brown carbon (BrC), where he developed methods to infer the absorption properties of organic aerosol from Siberian wildfires using remote optical observations.
