Dr. Michael Jong is a pioneering researcher in telemedicine and remote healthcare delivery, with a focus on improving health outcomes for Indigenous and underserved populations in northern Canada. His major contributions center on evaluating the feasibility and impact of robotic telepresence technologies in isolated communities, particularly among Inuit populations. His landmark 2013 study, "The use of remote presence for health care delivery in a northern Inuit community: a feasibility study," with 81 citations, demonstrated that mobile, wireless robots can enable physicians to be virtually present in remote clinics, assessing patient, nurse, and physician satisfaction with this innovative approach. This work laid critical groundwork for understanding how telemedicine can bridge geographic barriers. In his related study, "Impact of Robotic Telemedicine in a Remote Community in Canada," Dr. Jong explored how telerobotic systems can reduce morbidity and mortality in communities of 1,500 people in northern Labrador.
