About

Michael Ireland is an innovator in astronomical instrumentation, whose work bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and transformative science. His primary research areas include Galactic archaeology, exoplanet detection, and stellar astrophysics. Ireland played a leading role in the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES) at the Anglo-Australian Telescope, a facility-class instrument designed to unravel the formation and evolution of the Milky Way by analyzing the chemical fingerprints of hundreds of thousands of stars. He also spearheaded the development of the ultra-compact RHEA spectrograph, a replicable, high-resolution instrument for small robotic telescopes that enables dedicated exoplanet and asteroseismology studies. Beyond these flagship projects, Ireland contributed to the TAIPAN instrument, a prototype for the MANIFEST fiber positioner on the Giant Magellan Telescope, and led the discovery of δ Scuti pulsations in the hybrid debris disk star HD 156623 using the bRing robotic network.
