About

M. Galassi is a pioneering figure in time-domain optical astronomy, best known for developing autonomous robotic systems that monitor the night sky for fleeting cosmic events. His primary research focuses on real-time optical transient detection, robotic telescope automation, and the rapid follow-up of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Galassi’s most significant contribution is the RAPTOR (Rapid Telescopes for Optical Response) experiment, a spatially distributed network of robotic telescopes that stereoscopically monitors the sky for optical transients lasting as short as one minute. This closed-loop system, inspired by biomimicry of human vision, achieved a landmark success with the earliest optical detection of GRB 021211. His work on GROND (Gamma-Ray Burst Optical and Near-infrared Detector) further advanced the field by enabling simultaneous multi-band photometry of GRB afterglows to determine their redshifts. With over 100 combined citations, Galassi’s innovations have laid the groundwork for modern transient surveys, demonstrating how autonomous, real-time systems can unlock the dynamic universe.
