About

Larry Stitt is a biostatistician and research methodologist whose work has made significant contributions to the fields of robotic and minimally invasive surgery, particularly in the rigorous quantitative analysis of surgical learning curves. Best known for his collaborative research in telerobotic cardiac surgery and robot-assisted urological procedures, Stitt has helped establish evidence-based frameworks for evaluating how surgeons acquire complex technical skills. His landmark 2003 study on beating heart coronary artery bypass grafting, which has garnered 74 citations, provided one of the earliest systematic analyses of the learning curve in telerobotic cardiac surgery. Alongside this, his application of cumulative summation (CUSUM) methodology — a statistical quality control technique — to both off-pump coronary surgery and robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has given surgeons and institutions practical tools for monitoring performance and patient safety outcomes over time. His 2006 prospective angiographic comparison of internal thoracic artery harvesting approaches (44 citations) further demonstrates his breadth across surgical subspecialties. With a body of work accumulating over 300 citations, Stitt's contributions represent a vital statistical voice in advancing the safe adoption of emerging surgical technologies.
