About
R. Scott McClure is a pioneering cardiac surgeon whose research bridges the frontiers of minimally invasive surgery and robotic telesurgery. His key contributions span three interconnected domains: minimally invasive mitral valve repair, robotic-assisted coronary revascularization, and long-distance telesurgery. His landmark 2009 study on 707 patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve repair (128 citations) established benchmark early and late outcomes for the field. McClure’s work on hybrid revascularization—combining robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass with percutaneous intervention—has been validated by long-term angiographic follow-up studies (119 and 64 citations). Perhaps most notably, he conducted groundbreaking feasibility studies on robotic telesurgery for remote environments, systematically evaluating the impact of signal delays up to 1000 ms on surgical performance and comparing ground- versus satellite-based internet networks.
