About
LS Brinen has made pivotal contributions to the discovery of new treatments for neglected tropical diseases, particularly Chagas disease. Her research centers on target-based drug discovery and the structural biology of parasitic enzymes, with a major focus on cytochrome P450 enzymes as drug targets in *Trypanosoma cruzi*. Her highly cited 2009 review (173 citations) laid out two complementary strategies for developing new drugs for Chagas disease, combining rational target-based approaches with phenotypic screening. Brinen’s work has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of parasite biology and in identifying lead compounds that could address the urgent need for safer, more effective therapies. Her research at the Sandler Center, University of California, San Francisco, exemplifies how structural biology can drive drug discovery for diseases that disproportionately affect the world’s poorest populations. Through her sustained focus on translating basic science into clinical candidates, Brinen has become a respected figure in the neglected disease drug discovery community.
