About

Kyung Rae Kim is a pioneering surgeon whose work has redefined the landscape of minimally invasive head and neck surgery, with a particular focus on robotic thyroidectomy and neck dissection. His major contributions center on developing scarless, gasless surgical approaches that dramatically improve cosmetic outcomes and reduce postoperative pain for patients with thyroid cancer and early head and neck cancers. In a landmark 2012 study comparing robotic versus endoscopic thyroidectomy via a gasless unilateral axillo-breast or axillary approach—cited 55 times—Kim demonstrated the superior technical advantages of robotic assistance. He further advanced the field by introducing a robotic selective neck dissection procedure using a postauricular facelift approach, published in 2013 (36 citations), which eliminates the long visible lateral neck scar traditionally associated with such surgeries. His research also extends to postoperative pain management, showing in a 2015 study (6 citations) that robotic thyroidectomy results in significantly less pain than conventional open surgery. With an early background in mobile robot exploration using invisible barcodes (2006, 10 citations), Kim’s unique blend of engineering and surgical innovation underscores his commitment to merging technology with patient-centered care. His work has established new standards for cosmetic and functional outcomes in endocrine and oncologic head and neck surgery.
