About
Kathy Fowler is a leading researcher in the field of *in vitro* toxicology, with a primary focus on the biological assessment of tobacco smoke. Her key research areas center on the development and validation of whole smoke exposure systems, moving beyond traditional methods that only analyze particulate matter or gas vapor phases in isolation. Fowler’s major contribution is pioneering quantitative methods to accurately measure the dose of whole tobacco smoke delivered to cells in culture. Her most cited work, an inter-machine comparison of particle deposition across six independent smoke exposure systems (49 citations), established critical benchmarks for reproducibility and standardization in the field. She further advanced this methodology by developing a quantitative approach for dose assessment using the VITROCELL® VC10® system (10 citations), a platform now widely used for evaluating the toxicological impact of combustible tobacco products. Through her meticulous work, Fowler has provided the scientific community with essential tools to better understand the real-world biological effects of smoking, directly impacting regulatory science and product safety evaluation.
